Developed for Whitesburg, KY, this proposal provides a model for reclaiming and redeveloping strip and mountaintop removal coal mining sites in Appalachia with sustainable communities. Utilizing the City-as-a-Hill urban model developed by the CSC Design Studio, a dense, walkable, hilltown is created over the top of larger industrial spaces and parking, heated by an out-of-season solar hot air storage system that uses existing mining auger holes in the mountain. This design proposal was a finalist in the RIBA - Building a Sustainable World Competition, (2007).
